La Direction de L'EPFL veut étendre le Centre de mathématiques Bernoulli dans les bâtiments de la Ferme de Bassenges, qui a pourtant une fonction agricole depuis 300 ans. 

En 2020, l’EPFL a confié la ferme à de jeunes agriculteur·ices pour qu’ils·elles y développent une agriculture biologique. Le projet est un succès: la Ferme constitue aujourd’hui un modèle agricole reconnu au niveau cantonal. Malheureusement, seulement 5 ans après le début du projet, l’EPFL veut y mettre fin et abandonne son engagement en faveur d’une agriculture écologique.

Nous nous opposons fermement à cette transformation, qui va à l'encontre de la volonté non seulement des agriculteur·ices, mais aussi des étudiant·e·x·s et collaborateur·ice·x·s de l’EPFL et de l’UNIL et des habitant·e·x·s des communes avoisinantes, comme en témoigne la pétition de plus de 8 000 signatures déposée en juin 2024 à l’EPFL. Malgré cette large opposition, l’EPFL a confirmé en janvier 2025 la fin du contrat : les paysan·nes et leur famille, dont 2 enfants en bas âge, devront quitter la ferme au plus tard le 21 janvier 2026.

L’EPFL n’a pas pris en compte la première pétition. Il est temps de réaffirmer notre position avec cette nouvelle pétition réservée aux membres de l’EPFL et de l’UNIL. 

En effet, ce choix illustre le paradoxe criant d'une Direction déconnectée de la réalité et désintéressée des intérêts des usager·ère·x·s de leur campus. En effet, le cahier des charges auquel est soumise la Ferme stipule l'objectif de "matérialiser l'exemplarité attendue d'institutions universitaires engagées dans les enjeux de durabilité". La Direction de l'EPFL, qui s'auto-proclame "gardienne responsable de l'environnement" (Strategic plan, p.34), aurait-elle omis de considérer le sens de ses propres mots ? Le terme "durabilité" ne saurait se limiter à une couche superficielle d'écologie pour soigner l'image de l'établissement à un moment donné. Il impose au contraire de concevoir des projets ancrés dans le temps, porteurs d'une résilience réelle et pérenne.

En résumé, nous nous opposons fermement à la décision de l’EPFL car:

-- les communautés de l’EPFL et de l’UNIL bénéficient de la présence d’une ferme sur le campus qui pratique des méthodes agro-écologiques et lowtech: plus de 20 projets scientifiques y ont été conduits pour étudier l'agriculture de demain ;

-- des alternatives existent: le bâtiment actuel Centre Bernoulli peut être surélevé, comme le prévoient ses plans d'origine. Un studio d'étudiantexs en architecture a proposé à la Direction un projet complet de rehaussement du bâtiment ;

-- l’EPFL investira 10 millions pour transformer la Ferme, alors que les taxes des étudiant·e·x·s étranger·ère·x·s de l'EPFL vont tripler ;

-- la Ferme de Bassenges joue un rôle essentiel dans le tissu social de la région car des centaines de personnes s’y nourrissent, s’y éduquent et se divertissent lors des nombreux événements festifs et conviviaux organisés par les agriculteur·ices.

Signe cette pétition pour demander à la Direction de l’EPFL de renoncer à son projet et de considérer les alternatives. Chaque signature compte pour montrer à l’EPFL qu’une grande partie de la communauté EPFL-UNIL est opposée à la transformation de la Ferme de Bassenges.

The EPFL Direction wants to expand the Bernoulli Mathematics Center into the buildings of the Farm of Bassenges, which has an agricultural function for over 300 years.

In 2020, the EPFL entrusted the farm to young farmers so that they could develop organic farming methods. The project is a success: the Farm is now a recognized agricultural model at the cantonal level. Unfortunately, only 5 years after the start of the project, the EPFL wants to end it and abandon its commitment to ecological agriculture.

We strongly oppose this transformation, which goes against the wishes not only of the farmers, but also of the students and employees of the EPFL and UNIL and the inhabitants of the neighboring municipalities, as illustrated by the petition signed by more than 8,000 people and submitted in June 2024 to the EPFL. Despite this broad opposition, the EPFL confirmed the end of the contract in January 2025: the farmers and their families, including 2 young children, will have to leave the farm no later than January 21st 2026.

The EPFL did not take the first petition into account. It is time to reaffirm our position with this new petition reserved for members of EPFL and UNIL.

Indeed, this choice illustrates the glaring paradox of a Direction disconnected from reality and disinterested in the interests and needs of the users of their campus. Indeed, the specifications to which the Farm is subject stipulate the objective of "materializing the exemplarity expected of university institutions committed to sustainability issues". Has the EPFL Direction, which proclaims itself "responsible guardian of the environment" (Strategic plan, p.34), failed to consider the meaning of its own words? The word "sustainability" cannot be limited to a superficial layer of ecology to improve the institution's image at a given moment. On the contrary, it requires designing projects that are anchored in time and that provide real and lasting resilience.

 In summary, we strongly oppose EPFL's decision because:

-- the EPFL and UNIL communities benefit from the presence of a farm on campus that practices agro-ecological and low-tech methods: more than 20 scientific projects have been conducted there to study the agriculture of tomorrow;

-- alternatives exist: the current Bernoulli Center building can be raised, as designed in its original plans. A studio of architecture students has proposed to the Direction a complete project to raise the building;

-- the EPFL will invest 10 million Swiss Francs to transform the Farm, while the taxes of EPFL's foreign students will triple;

-- the Ferme de Bassenges plays an essential role in the social life of the region because hundreds of people feed themselves there, are educated there and are entertained during the many festive and friendly events organized by the farmers.

Sign this petition to ask the EPFL Direction to abandon its project and to consider alternatives. Each signature counts to show the EPFL that a large part of the EPFL-UNIL community is opposed to the transformation of the Ferme de Bassenges.
