The Critical Minerals Observatory is a new  initiative from the European Network of Corporate Observatories (ENCO); a knowledge hub (critical space)  to exchange ideas, resources and develop collaborative research. This Observatory will look at the strategies of transnational corporations and governments (in the Global North) to secure supplies of critical minerals in the name of the energy transition. The aim is to provide civil society organizations, media, and public authorities with information and tools to better understand the impacts and strategies of transnational corporations and financial players in global supply chains of transition minerals. Through the development of data, case studies, and critical research reports, the Observatory seeks to strengthen public debate on these issues, supporting advocacy activities and mobilizing civil society and movements. The observatory will highlight how these corporate strategies can affect people and the planet, creating new sacrifice zones, while giving more power to the wealthiest and ultimately undermining the energy transformation that Europe actually needs. It will also shed light on who rips the benefits, through the publication and dissemination of media articles and in-depth reports.

The launch of the Observatory will take place during the Raw Materials Week, to expose the necessity to monitor the implementation of the CRMA and its negative impacts on communities and the environment. During the presentation, we will discuss how we can use available public data to understand better who the main players are on on the global supply chains and hear about the corporate impunity of one of the largest mining companies worldwide: Rio Tinto, with voices of affected communities in Madagascar and Serbia.

The invited speakers are:
  • Zo Randriamaro, the founder and Coordinator of the Research and Support Center for Development Alternatives – Indian Ocean (CRAAD-OI), a Pan-African organisation based in Madagascar that provides support to women, youth and local communities for the defence of their fundamental rights and the promotion of development alternatives based on principles of social, economic and ecological justice.
  • Jovan Rajik (Renewables and Environmental Regulatory Institute, Serbia)
  • Steven Rolf, Senior Research Fellow at the University of Sussex Business School and Co-founder of the Mapping (De)Globalization Research Project

Moderation by Olivier Petitjean (Observatoire des Multinationales, ENCO)
