At the end of November 2024, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced an ‘omnibus’ proposal with the stated aim of improving the competitiveness of European businesses. The proposal represents a risk of weakening the emblematic texts of the Green Deal (CSRD, due diligence and taxonomy). It will be presented on 26 February.
The Commission could entirely renegotiate the objectives of the texts (level 1 procedure), or ‘only’ reduce their scope or date of application (level 2 delegated acts, in which case the procedure is very quick, and the deadlines for influencing decision-making very short). While the negotiations are underway, we feel it is crucial to debunk the underlying economic rationale and highlight the risks posed by this approach.
We have therefore drafted a letter, available here : https://docs.google.com/document/d/1DjguoHJHcIOWYCtUUljZABGIBJIhxCnf/edi....
Addressed to Ursula von der Leyen and Stéphane Séjourné, it will be published in Euractiv around 7/8 February, in English and French. The aim of this letter is to mobilise as many academic voices as possible, complementary to similar initiatives by associations. It is open for academics and scholars only.
We therefore invite you to sign this open letter with us - the Veblen Institute for economic reforms and our scientific advisor, Jezabel Couppey-Soubeyran.
